Addington Hospital is a 524-bed mixed regional/district level hospital on south beach serving the population of central and north Durban. Surgical specialties represented at regional level are general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology and ophthalmic surgery. Obstetrics and paediatrics are a district level service.
5 theatres in the operating suite undertake around 7000 procedures per annum.
Anaesthetic staffing consists of 1 principle specialist (Dr RE Hodgson), 2 senior specialists (Drs MC Geddes and JT Fabian) and 1 CMO/specialist (Dr S Bugwandeen). 3 principle medical officers, 1 senior medical officer, 1 medical officer and 4 registrars on rotation from the medical school make up the complement. In addition, the senior anaesthetists cover a separately staffed 3 bed intensive care unit.
Emphasis is placed on regional anaesthesia (including ophthalmic blocks) and airway management.
